Local Native to Provide Eating Disorder Treatment

A West Palm Beach woman  has long dreamed of: offering on-site, affordable treatment services for under-insured or uninsured patients struggling with an eating disorder. Johanna Kandel spent a decade of her formative years battling — and eventually recovering from — her eating disorder. She’s spent every day since October 2000 — when she founded The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness — helping others battle theirs.

The nonprofit organization’s latest venture is one that Kandel has long dreamed of: offering on-site, affordable treatment services for under-insured or uninsured patients struggling with an eating disorder.

The Alliance’s Psychological Services center makes it the nation’s first facility where eating-disorder patients can receive individual treatment regardless of their insurance coverage.

“This is something we’ve wanted to do for more than a decade,” Kandel said of the program that will be staffed by two post-doctoral fellows and supervised by Clinical Director Dr. Joann Hendelman. “It’s going to save lives.”
